Britain’s Biggest bingo operator Gala Bingo is hit by the credit crunch

Posted on June 16, 2009 by Margaret Brown

The gaming world is finally feeling the pressure of the current economic crisis. Evidence of this is the 200 jobs which will be lost when Gala Coral goes ahead with its plans to close at least six of its 156 land based bingo clubs.

The land based bingo sector has not only been affected by the current market downturn but it is also believed that the indoor smoking ban and the limitations placed on money spinning gaming machines have had a detrimental effect on clubs.

Gala Coral or Gala Bingo employs around 19,000 people and is a privately owned company. However, unfortunately it has seen its earnings fall 10% in the last year. The current closures are hopefully the only cuts Gala will make as 19,000 people rely on them for their livelihood. One answer would be it seems is for Gala bingo to rethink its marketing strategy and put the fun and the attraction back into bingo.
